Kherson Sea Commercial Port was founded in 1778. Such googs as grain, timber and wool were exported via the port. By 1900, the port held 4th place among the export centres of Russia. The port is designed to handle 5 million tons of cargo per year.
Kherson is the major city of Kherson Province situated on the Dnieper's right bank near its fall into the Dneprovsky estuary of the Black Sea. City has shipbuilding, machine manufactures, oil refineries, textile and food industries. There are seaport and river port as well, as a railway station, airport. The population is just about 350,000.

In 1778 by order of the Russian Senate, the city of Kherson was founded with a military fortress, harbour and shipyard constructed with the aim if building ships for Black Sea Navy. The city was actually named after the ancient Greek colony of Khersones, founded in the 5th century B.C., wich played an important role in the histiry of the Black Sea's northern coast...
